Charles D. Mayer, Psy. D.

BACKGROUND
After completing his undergraduate studies in music at Oberlin College and working as a free-lance musician in Boston, Dr. Mayer completed his M.Div. at Harvard Divinity School in 1982. While at Harvard, he served as a Student Chaplain at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and the Parkway Hospital for Women, deepening his interest in the interface of psychology and spirituality. When the two hospitals were merging to form the Brigham and Women's Hospital, he worked closely with the staff as the complex transition occurred, which heightened his interest in organizational consulting.
After graduation and ordination, Dr. Mayer began several years of parish ministry, during which his special interest in counseling and psychotherapy emerged as the central calling of his life. He eventually began intensive clinical training as a Resident at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute in New York City, completing Certificates in Pastoral Psychotherapy, Group Psychotherapy and Marriage and Family Therapy. Upon graduation in 1992, he continued for several years at Blanton-Peale as a teacher and supervisor in both the Residency and Pastoral Studies programs.
In addition, he opened his private practice, now in its eighteenth year. Dr. Mayer's practice has come to include a wide range of patients in individual, couples and group psychotherapy. He has developed an innovative therapeutic model using Freudian, Jungian and various contemporary approaches, which allows for the fullest possible exploration of the uniqueness of each patient. Dr. Mayer outlined this approach in a paper submitted to the Graduate Theological Foundation, which awarded him the Psy.D. in 2008.
In additon to his psychotherapeutic work, Dr. Mayer is available for executive coaching and organizational consulting.
